Why Now?

In early 2009, as we began to see where large-scale business mobility was headed, we started building the Leapfactor platform and its service/value proposition. There were naysayers and skeptical e-mails at first, and we faced the typical disadvantages any pioneer does. But the market opportunity is becoming more evident and software incumbents and entrepreneurs will soon crowd the playing field.

Beyond the hype about smartphones and their potential, hard facts and changed consumer behaviors make it impossible to deny their relevance. Device manufacturers are reacting to changes; PC manufacturers are entering the space; carriers are fighting to maintain control of the market; and software giants are trying to understand the implications of the new phenomenon. As with any innovation in the IT world, the principal players are looking at the benefits and risks.

The Smartphone era is not precisely a revolution; it is a next step in an Internet evolution that is taking connectivity to the next level—a personal level that goes beyond PCs and cables, electrical outlets, and the four walls of homes and cubicles.

Apple gets the credit for taking the smartphone experience to a higher level. Maybe even they didn’t realize it, but without the iPhone’s ease of use and cool factor this evolution would have been slow and painful. Since the iPhone, the smartphone consumer segment has grown exponentially and this growth is key to Leapfactor. Analysts agree.

The advent of wireless communications and the subsequent multi-functionality of “always-on” mobile devices have spurred a dramatic increase in, and adoption of, consumer-centric applications. Meanwhile in the business world, a growing adoption of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) tells us that now is the time to unleash the power of mobility—and activate maximum value in every employee.

What Leapfactor celebrates is not that now you do more from your cell phone. We love that you no longer need a laptop to work on the go. Finally the “anywhere and anytime” promise is a reality.

Three quarters of the world’s people will live in urban areas by 2030 and all will be connected on the go. Consumer markets are developing right now—and let’s not forget—consumers are also employees.
